Sankara N Sankaran is a Group Supervisor of Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc., and Materials Discipline Lead for the TEAMS 3 Contract supporting materials research at the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch. He is currently supervising the 10-member Research and Technical Staff in mechanical testing, metallurgical analysis, and materials processing. Dr. Sankaran earned his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York (1987) and has over 40 years of professional management and technical achievements related to materials engineering. Currently supporting characterization of EBF3 process development of titanium and aluminum alloys, specifically on the role of deposition parameters on properties and microstructure of the resultant product. Proficiency in electron microscopy, surface analytical techniques, x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, ultrahigh vacuum permeation measurements, and ability to design and build customized test equipment for special tests. Experience includes the support for design and assembly of surface analysis capability in the laboratory, development of measurement technique for hydrogen uptake in titanium alloys, and development of a portable leak detection technology for X-33 hydrogen leak investigation, the latter leading to a Certification of Recognition by NASA. Under the NASP program, characterized the oxidation and hydrogenation behavior of titanium aluminide alloys and supported the development of coatings for oxidation, emittance control, and catalysis control for titanium alloys and nickel alloys. Under the HSCT program developed heat treatment schedules to optimize the mechanical properties of Beta-S titanium alloy.
