Dr. Lisa Carnell is currently serving on detail as the Senior Scientist for Partnerships under the Space Life and Physical Sciences (SLPSRA) Division at HQ. Prior to this, she was the Space Radiation Medical Countermeasure Lead for the NASA Human Research Program (HRP). In this role, she was involved in all aspects of radiation induced health effects including cancer, cardiovascular, central nervous system and acute radiation syndrome effects. Dr. Carnell was responsible for the development of a strategic plan to pursue medical countermeasures and identifying promising candidates for the transition to operations process that will reduce risk and resource utilization with the overall goal of preserving astronaut health during and after missions. Lisa continues to lead a project to employ IBM Watson to support countermeasure discovery across multiple potential disease states that could result from space radiation and other space flight induced health effects. She works closely with several agencies to support these efforts and serves as the NASA representative on numerous boards and panels. Dr. Carnell holds a PhD from Duke University where she studied the effect of physiological and electrical signals on the differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells |
