Dr. John W. Connell

Dr. John W. Connell is a senior scientist in the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch at the NASA Langley Research Center where he has worked for over 30 years.  He received B.S. (’82 Chemistry) and Ph.D. (’86 Organic/Polymer Chemistry) degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He is the author or coauthor of over 150 journal articles, 200 conference publications, and 45 U.S. Patents. He received the prestigious NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement in 1997, Co-Inventor Commercial Invention of the Year for NASA in 2008, and Exceptional Technology Achievement Medal in 2015.  Over 10 of his inventions have been licensed and made into commercial products.  He is Editor-in-Chief of High Performance Polymers Journal and a Fellow of both the Institute of Physics and the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE). His present work involves the use of a laser to conduct surface treatment and analysis of aerospace structural composites and metal alloys for adhesive bonding. He is also working on novel carbon materials such as holey graphene and related architectures for energy storage applications.
