Dr. David E. Stegall is a Senior Engineer for Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc. and has over 20 years of experience in testing for mechanical properties at the coupon, component, and system level, the last 10 of which have been at NASA Langley. He holds a BS (1996), ME (2000), and PhD (2016) in Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University as well as an MBA (2005) also from Old Dominion University. His doctoral research involved examining the nanomechanical behavior of metals using nanoindentation techniques. He is currently supporting the Light Alloys Lab in the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch. In this position, he performs characterization and analysis for a variety of materials using techniques including X-Ray diffraction, X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, as well micro and nanoindentation and traditional mechanical testing. In addition to this experience, Dr. Stegall has served as test engineer for the Orion program where he was responsible for static load testing of the Orion ground test article when assigned to the Structural Dynamics Branch. Also in this capacity, he conducted testing to understand the dynamics associated with water impact as well as testing crushable energy absorbing materials. Finally, he has worked for numerous other projects of a diverse nature including instrumentation for wind tunnel applications and performing systems level engineering duties.
